It started with one wedding.
A handful of shabab, a drum, and a couple who wanted a real zaffa. By the end of that first year we were the first dabka group in North Carolina, and the Reels from those nights had found a crowd of their own.
The short version of how a few friends in North Carolina ended up leading zaffas across the state.
A handful of shabab, a drum, and a couple who wanted a real zaffa. By the end of that first year we were the first dabka group in North Carolina, and the Reels from those nights had found a crowd of their own.

Dabka is how our grandparents celebrated, and how we still do. We named the group for what the dance gives a room the moment the drum starts.
We perform it, we teach it, and we pull guests into the line so it keeps moving. Weddings, henna nights, graduations, community events, and the odd stage in DC or Chicago.

Keffiyehs, embroidered vests, and the satin we save for weddings. The stitch on the vests is tatreez, the same cross-stitch you'll find on a thobe from back home, and it's the one pattern you'll see on this site.
